In the wake of President Donald Trump’s sweeping executive order protecting Second Amendment rights, gun prohibition lobbying groups have reacted predictably, defending the Biden administration’s alleged “progress” on “gun violence” and intimating the order will increase dangers to children.

Giffords, the gun control organization founded by and named for former Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords, declared, “The president’s priority should be to build on the lifesaving progress made over the last four years, not boost profits for gun company CEOs.”

In a news release, Giffords stated, “The Second Amendment isn’t under attack. GIFFORDS built a coalition of thousands of gun owners who, like me, know that there is no conflict between the Second Amendment and commonsense gun safety. Any effort to repeal important, lifesaving measures will harm public safety and put our children at risk. The safety of our families, our children, our schools and our communities is not a partisan issue. That’s not what Americans voted for in November.”

TRUMP ISSUES SWEEPING EXECUTIVE ORDER ON 2A RIGHTS

The Brady group’s national policy director, Mark Collins, asserted that existing gun policies “were perfectly in line with Second Amendment rights, and we’re hoping that at the end of this review, there might be some restraint and objectivity.”

“Maybe they’re planning to roll back everything,” Collins said, “which is a really bad idea, especially considering that we just went through the sharpest drop in gun homicides in modern American history.”

As reported by Straight Arrow News, Trump’s executive order focuses on several Biden-era gun control efforts:

  • Ghost gun regulations – Biden required serial numbers on DIY gun kits and background checks for their purchase.
  • Expanded background checks – Biden attempted to close the gun show loophole, requiring private sellers to follow federal licensing rules.
  • Gun dealer oversight – The ATF’s “zero tolerance” policy led to record numbers of gun dealer license revocations for serious violations.
  • Legal defense of Biden gun laws – The Justice Department’s defense of firearm restrictions in ongoing court cases is under review.
  • White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention – Trump’s order calls for an examination of the now-defunct office’s reports and policy recommendations.

Brady United contends, “An objective review of the actions taken by the Biden Administration on firearms will show that his historic policies – including cracking down on rogue gun traffickers and expanding Brady Background Checks – are both effective and constitutional. They must be continued if this President actually wants to achieve any of his campaign promises around reducing crime, cracking down on drug trafficking, and reducing the flow of trafficked weapons across the southern border.”
