Monday’s multiple murder shooting in a Manhattan office building is a graphic reminder about the failure of the gun control mentality, especially considering the location—the middle of New York City, where gun control laws are among the most restrictive anywhere in the United States.
Nevada-based Shane Tamura, who reportedly took his own life after gunning down four people including a New York police officer, drove cross-country with a semiautomatic rifle and a revolver, with the intent of targeting the NFL headquarters, which is located in the same office building. He reportedly took the wrong elevator bank, ending up in the wrong office area, according to Fox News.
Congressman Dan Goldman (R-NY) quickly tried to blame Republicans for opposing “common sense” gun laws, including a nationwide ban on so-called “assault weapons.” But U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) told Fox News, “We don’t need more gun control, we need more idiot control.”
New York bans so-called “assault rifles.” New York City is virtually a “gun free zone” under existing state laws allowing gun bans in so-called “sensitive places.” It is difficult, if not impossible, to get a carry permit in the city. All of these restrictions were adopted with the argument they would prevent such violent crimes.
The dead killer allegedly “blamed football for his apparent struggle with the neurodegenerative disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and pleaded for his brain to be studied in the wake of the massacre,” according to the New York Post. He reportedly left a rambling three-page note.
Fox News is reporting Tamura played football at Granada Hills Charter school in Granada Hills, Calif. He had a concealed firearms permit issued in June 2022 by the Las Vegas, Nev., police department. He was also reportedly a licensed private investigator.
Images of the killer walking across a plaza before entering the building show him carrying the rifle by his side, yet in a city with millions of people, apparently nobody noticed the long gun.
Within hours of the shooting, authorities had managed to track Tamura’s movements across the country. He drove from Nevada through Colorado and Kansas, making it to New Jersey and finally to downtown New York City. Investigators recovered his loaded revolver and more ammunition when they searched his car.
