An Alabama state representative now running to become the next mayor of Mobile has declared on social media she intends to launch a campaign to push a restrictive gun control policy, according to the 1819 Newsletter.

Democratic State Rep. Barbara Drummond made the announcement in a Facebook post. She vowed to “spearhead an effort by cities to demand the legislature repeal the open carry act and empower municipalities to ban guns in public areas.”

The incident which set Drummond’s declaration in motion was a shooting at Mobile’s Saenger Theatre on Sunday. According to 1819 News, two adults began arguing at the theatre and one drew a gun, shooting the other one. The shooter fled, but later turned himself in, the story said.

In her message, Drummond asserted, “It is common sense to save innocent lives and ensure Mobile is safe for everyone. We can not allow gun violence to shatter the spaces where our families gather, our children perform, and our community finds joy.”

The shooting incident occurred during what Drummond described as a children’s dance recital.

Taylor Rhodes, a spokesman for BamaCarry, told 1819 News, “Barbara Drummond is using a tragedy to push a radical, anti-gun agenda that targets the rights of peaceable Alabamians. Her plan to repeal open carry and create gun-free zones isn’t about safety; it’s about Democrat control.”

He also reportedly stated, “Gun-free zones are soft targets that embolden criminals, not stop them. Stripping citizens of their ability to defend themselves in public places is not ‘common sense’—it’s evil, reckless, and dangerous. BamaCarry will fight tooth and nail to ensure her Bloomberg-backed gun control fantasies never see the light of day in Alabama. We don’t need more restrictions on gun owners, we need politicians who understand and respect the Constitution.”

Drummond said the problem “is guns in the wrong hands and wrong places.”

In her message, she did not mention the individual responsible for the shooting, but instead focused on gun control and adding restrictions on law-abiding citizens.
