UPDATE: The Daily Mail, a British publication, is reporting that as many as ten people have been killed at a school shooting in Sweden. The UK-based news agency is also reporting that “terrifying new footage” of the attack in progress has surfaced, showing the alleged killer “pacing through the hallway of Risbergska School in Örebro’s Västhaga district.”
At least five people have been “injured” in a shooting at the Riskbergska School in the town of Orebro, Sweden, several news agencies are reporting, and there apparently many more casualties, according to one unconfirmed report.
Initial story below
The Independent, a UK news agency, is reporting that several people were killed and “dozens injured” in the shooting, referring to a broadcast by SVT, the Swedish Public Radio.
The gunman may have taken his own life, according to Newsweek. News agencies have been showing images of police officers with drawn sidearms in defensive positions
CBS News is reporting that the school is “an adult education center.” Police had no immediate information about the condition of any of the victims, but the incident could be used as an example that such incidents are not confined to the United States.
According to Fox News, Swedish police were advising people to stay away from the area where the school is located. There is currently no announced motive for the incident, and CBS notes, “Sweden’s TT news agency said, citing anonymous sources, that the shooter had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
The BBC is quoting a teacher identified as Lena Warnmark, who reportedly told Swedish Public Radio (SVT) she heard “about ten shots.” According to the BBC report, the shooting occurred “just before 13:00 (1 p.m.).”
The school reportedly sits on a larger campus which hosts several schools. This particular school is for adults over the age of 20. Newsweek said the Riskbergska School “is formerly a high school and now an education center for adults who did not complete school.”
According to CNN and other news agencies, the community is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Stockholm, the Swedish capital.
The operation was still underway and police reportedly warned the danger may not be over.
It is not known if the shooter is listed among those “injured,” or if any of the victims had died.
