With the ever growing surge in popularity of suppressors and the push to take them off the NFA a book covering this long neglected subject is very timely.
Silencers are the best hearing protection you can have for unlike shooter’s ear plugs and ear muffs they are always in place for a sudden emergency or when game appears while hunting. All of my old shooting friends had to have hearing aids because of gun blast damage to their ears so the inclusion of silencers in the NFA has long been a sore spot for me.
Many people want nothing to do with registration and the BATF, not to mention the $200 transfer tax and all the hoops you have to jump through and the insufferable delays involved. Then there is the very real and justified fear that some cop or game warden will over react upon seeing a NFA item. Finally, you better have your paperwork and stamp tax ready to show even a level headed law enforcement officer and heaven help you if you have lost or forgotten to bring them. All this is more than enough to keep most people away from any NFA covered item.
If silencers are ever to take their place alongside auto mufflers as hearing protectors they must be deregulated and sold as freely as automobile mufflers. If they remain restricted the only ones who will benefit are the hearing aid companies.
In this book there are X-ray photos showing the internal construction of many of the different silencers on the market which are a great help in evaluating the various designs. There are lots of reviews of popular silencers on the market today along with a good description of how silencers work.
Maintenance is just as important with silencers as it is with the rest of the gun so instructions on cleaning are a vital part of this book as is the section on getting new internal parts when needed.
The .300 Blackout cartridge has a chapter and there are also chapters on building specialized suppressed rifles around this cartridge which was specifically developed to be a potent rifle cartridge for use with suppressors. Previously, most of the quietest suppressed rifles were chambered for pistol cartridges. The .300 Blackout silenced rifles offer a significant improvement in performance without an increase in noise.
The history of silencers is also covered as well as the current law under the NFA regulating them.
This is a very important and timely book for as silencers grow in popularity there is a real need for more information on this subject which has been neglected for far too long.—Jim Dickson
