Animal Tracks and Signs covers the animals found in North America.
With such a wide spectrum it is no surprise that the amount devoted to each animal is usually small of necessity. There are high quality photographs of the tracks to aid in identification and important differences between often confused tracks between different species are shown such as how to tell wolverine tracks from wolf tracks. These animals represent entirely different potential threats to dwellers of the deep woods and knowing which one you are dealing with can be very important.
BOOK REVIEW: Practical Tracking
Game species such as deer, elk moose, caribou, and bears get special attention for these are likely of the most interest to the average reader. This is especially true for the chapter on deer where the author strives to provide as much useful information to the deer hunter as he can. Reading and interpreting deer tracks is vital for pre-season scouting and tracking a heart shot deer for many a mortally wounded deer has escaped the hunter and fed only the buzzards when it died.
Hooved game such as buffalo, mountain goats, antelope, and wild hog are well shown and telling all these tracks apart can be very important, especially the wild hog whose numbers have become a plague in ever increasing parts of the country.
For the naturalist wanting to better identify all the signs about him in the woods this book is excellent for it covers not only game birds but lesser also herons, cranes, and shorebirds. The tracks made by turtles and frogs as well as chipmunks, possums and coons help the outdoorsman read his surroundings like a book.
All in all this books provides a scaffolding which the reader can build upon to increase his understanding of whose who and what’s happening in the woods around him.—Jim Dickson
