As conflict between Israel and Iran continues, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has reportedly “cleared an additional 41 Jerusalem neighborhoods for personal firearms licenses,” and his remarks could echo across oceans to the U.S. Congress.
The Times of Israel is quoting Ben Gvir stating, “Firearms in the hands of responsible citizens constitute an important component in strengthening personal security and enabling an initial response to terror and crime.”
Security and public safety have always been top concerns in Israel, and Ben Gvir has been a proponent of armed civilians. He is reportedly concerned about the war and the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Armed citizens have fought back against terrorist attacks.
The Times of Israel estimates that more than 300,000 Jewish residents will be eligible to get a firearm thanks to Ben Gvir’s actions.
The Times story also notes advocacy groups against domestic violence are wary about increased access to firearms, asserting it puts “women with violent partners at even greater risk” as there was a “sharp uptick” in slayings last year, “though only three women were murdered with a licensed gun” out of 32 women slain.
