Despite meek arguments from some liberals on social media that victorious Democrats have “more pressing” issues than gun control following their sweep across the country Tuesday, in at least two states, they’ve already tipped their hands and signaled what is on the horizon.

In Minnesota, Governor-elect Amy Klobuchar—a reliable anti-gun vote in Congress—is quoted by WCCO News promising she will sign legislation banning so-called “assault weapons” even despite the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in mid-2027 which many believe will affirm modern semi-automatic rifles and pistols are protected by the Second Amendment.

A spokesperson for Minnesota Moms Demand Action, a gun prohibition lobbying group, stated, “We have so many guns in this country. We have 400 million guns in this country, more guns than people.”

The Trace—backed by anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg—is reporting how “A national blue wave will give Pennsylvania Democrats their greatest chance in more than 30 years of passing gun reform bills that have been languishing in the state Legislature.”

Declaring Democrats have “more important” things on their minds is an exercise in naivete, many Second Amendment grassroots activists believe, and so far, media reports have not suggested their impression is wrong.

An email blast from the Second Amendment Foundation notes, “Several of the new U.S. senators ran on gun control, and they didn’t hide it:

  • James Talarico, Texas. Endorsed by Giffords. He wants to raise the age to buy semi-automatic rifles. In 2020, he said he supported “an assault weapon ban, a large capacity magazine ban.”
  • Peggy Flanagan, Minnesota. Endorsed by Giffords. “We need to love our kids more than we love our guns,” she said, and that “starts with banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.”
  • Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan. Backed by Everytown. His take on the Second Amendment: “When they promised the right to bear arms, they had muskets. So, yeah, everyone should have equal rights to a musket.”
  • Annie Andrews, South Carolina. Endorsed by major gun-control groups. She campaigned on “banning weapons of war from our streets.”

Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, will be telling members and supporters to prepare for a fight, reminding them, “With the number of anti-gun candidates elected to seats in Congress, State Legislatures and Governor`s Mansions the threat to our 2A rights will be at record levels…while promising that CCRKBA will be on the front lines of looming battles.

At the National Rifle Association, John Commerford, executive director of the Institute for Legislative Action, issued the following statement Wednesday: “Last night’s results put progressive majorities in control of Congress and additional state houses across the country, leaving the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans under direct and immediate threat. The NRA is ready to stand and fight in Congress, the courts, and in every state where those rights are at risk. This is not the time to sit idly by and lick our wounds—it’s the time to stand up, engage, organize, and join the fight to protect the Second Amendment. The only way we stop this radical gun-grabbing agenda is if gun owners get activated to defend their rights and work tirelessly to elect pro-gun politicians in 2028.”

In a YouTube video, Gun Owners of America says there are serious gun rights battles ahead in Congress.

The Trace acknowledged in a report that with Donald Trump still in the White House with a veto pen, it will be tough to pass more gun control: “With their congressional majorities, Democrats could pass gun reform legislation, but it’s unlikely to become law while President Donald Trump remains in the White House.”

So it is likely gun control efforts will be mainly focused on state legislatures, where boots-on-the-ground grassroots activists will be busiest.

The Trace report quotes Kris Brown, Brady group president, declaring, “This election marks a mandate to enact and implement robust public safety policies that will meaningfully address the crisis of American gun violence.”
