The Outdoor Wire is reporting that a representative for Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors has issued a statement in response to the National Rifle Association’s application in support of arbitration over a $200 million claim against the Texas-based law firm.
As reported earlier by TGM and other news agencies, NRA contends that attorney William A Brewer III and his firm caused the gun rights organization “catastrophic financial and reputational harm.”
The Brewer firm has come back with a statement calling NRA’s assertions “baseless claims.”
As published by The Outdoor Wire, Brewer’s 183-word statement reads as follows:
“In 2018, after the State of New York announced a campaign coordinated with other states to destroy the NRA, one firm was asked to save the organization. We accomplished the job, including leading the NRA’s advocacy that secured the most important First Amendment win in the U.S. Supreme Court in the last 65 years. To say we are proud of our record over the six years we served as the NRA’s counsel is an understatement. The NRA’s own leaders said so publicly. In 2019, then-President Carolyn Meadows said she had never worked with an outside law firm ‘more on call, attentive, and positively in tune to the needs of their client.’ At the conclusion of our representation in 2024, the NRA’s Special Litigation Committee, composed of then-President Bob Barr, former President Charles Cotton, and longtime director David Coy, stated: ‘Fortunately, we chose the Brewer firm to defend us.’ Former President Charles Cotton said ‘the Brewer firm’s strategic counsel and unique brand of advocacy helped us achieve victory’ in the Supreme Court. We will vigorously defend that record of excellence against these baseless claims.”
NRA’s six-page application, filed in the 68th District of Dallas County District Court, is accompanied by pages of exhibits dating back to M arch 2018, when NRA selected Brewer to represent the organization in a legal action.
