Australia is still working through the aftermath of the Bondi Beach terror attack on Dec. 14, 2025, but gun owners in the Island Continent are now preparing to fight back against politicians in New South Wales (NSW) over the gun restrictions they passed ten days after the attack.
The Guardian is reporting an announcement from the Australian Recreation Union that it will be “targeting marginal Labor seats in next year’s” NSW elections. It might not compare to the National Rifle Association zeroing in on some politician, but in perspective, it might come close. ARU Director Tracy Gavan reportedly sent an email to vulnerable Labor politicians which stated, “This is not a personal attack on you. We understand that as a backbencher, you are not in a position to vote contrary to the party line. However, unfortunately, NSW Labor has taken an unjustified and evidence-free position against firearm owners. We are happy to discuss why we are targeting all of Labor’s vulnerable seats in the 2027 election. To meet or have a conversation about these issues, please let me know a suitable date and time.”
According to The Guardian article, the ARU “announced in late December its intention to support candidates and parties that opposed the laws in an email” to Gurmesh Singh, head of the National Party. Singh reportedly stated that Premier Chris Minns “is holding farmers, sporting shooters, and law-abiding firearms owners responsible for the actions of extremist terrorists.”
The Labor Party says their gun control laws are designed to “protect the community” and they aren’t offering apologies.
Gun control laws adopted in reaction to the Bondi Beach attack—the handiwork of a father-son terrorist duo—include a limit on recreational firearm ownership to four guns per individual, and 10 for “commercial users” including farmers, along with sport and target shooters.
There is no equivalent to the Second Amendment in Australia. Gun ownership there is heavily regulated, and gun owners may not be as well organized as U.S. gun owners with organizations including the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Gun Owners of America and other groups.
However, faced with the restrictions they now face, gun owners are organizing, and the vow to work against vulnerable politicians in 2027 should probably be taken seriously.
