Following ICE Shooting in Dallas, Dems Reflexively Deflect to Gun Control

Almost reflexively, Democrats including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called for action on guns following a shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas.

It may be the most predictable reflex in American politics. On the heels of the shooting incident at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas, Democrats quickly focused on gun control.

At least, that’s how The Guardian headlined its coverage: “Texas Ice (sic) facility shooting: Republicans blame ‘radical left’ as Democrats focus on victims and gun control.”

The Guardian report quotes Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pennsylvania), who stated on X: “Leave it to this administration to use a shooting against immigrant detainees to score political points and further provoke violence. We have to get guns off our streets and reject xenophobic and anti-immigrant sentiment that makes all of us less safe.”

But then National Review is reporting how perennial anti-gun Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), the Senate minority leader, was among Democrats who “blamed the violence on the ubiquity of guns in America.”

Schumer, who has never seen a gun control measure he didn’t support, who stated Wednesday, “I don’t know what’s happened here and I don’t know about the guns, but we need better laws on guns.”

This was before authorities knew very much about the shooting, which left one person, plus the 29-year-old identified as the killer, dead. No ICE personnel were injured.

Writing at National Review, Noah Rothman observed, “This is a mantra — a catechism to which Democrats appeal when acts of obvious political violence cannot plausibly be attributed to the right. We know that to be the case because when acts of political violence can be linked to right, Democrats and their allies in the media do not hesitate to spell out the truth as they see it. The obfuscation to which Schumer appealed is, however, an instrument of political utility that may no longer be as effective as it once was.”

Amid the coverage of the Dallas shooting, The Sun reported on the mother of suspected shooter Joshua Jahn, noting, “Years before the attack, Jahn’s mother Sharon Jahn blasted Republican lawmakers for not restricting gun access in the state of Texas, according to Facebook posts seen by The U.S. Sun.”

Go to Facebook now and search for Sharon Jahn, and one comes up with a horde of references to her, none of them flattering.

The Daily Mail, another British-based news outlet, profiled Sharon Jahn as following “everyone from Kamala Harris and Rachel Maddow to an account representing the U.S. Democratic Socialists.”

The report suggested she had railed against various Republicans including Sen. Ted Cruz and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for their stands on gun rights.

Currently, there is no established motive for the Dallas attack. The suspect took his own life.
