Is embattled Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz trying to deflect attention a way from the multi-million dollar welfare fraud scandal by hitting social media with posts about banning so-called “assault weapons?”

It sort of looks that way with messages on ‘X’ which refer to polling that says a majority of Minnesotans support a ban on “assault weapons.”

“A new poll shows overwhelming support for an assault weapons ban,” says the governor. “Nearly 70% of Minnesotans support it. It’s hard to get that much agreement on anything. People are demanding action on the weapons that have caused terror and heartbreak for our state.”

In a separate post, Walz says, “79% of Minnesotans in the Twin Cities suburbs say they support banning assault weapons like the AR-15.”

Not surprisingly, the first message has garnered thousands of responses. The subsequent message had more than 500 responses at last check. A glance at replies indicates they are overwhelmingly negative.

Walz has been under fire for weeks since the discovery of alleged fraud involving people in the state’s Somali community. An investigation has been launched by the Treasury Department over concerns some of the money going to Somalis had been transferred to the al-Shabaab jihadist group, according to Fox News.

Fox is reporting that “Cash flows from the U.S. to Somalia totaled about $215 million last year.”

Yet Walz appears more interested in getting public attention focused on banning an entire class of firearms.

In a separate Fox News report, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has issued a “scathing response” to Walz’s request for the Department of Homeland Security “to ‘reassess’ its immigration enforcement strategy.”

McLaughlin reportedly told Fox News Digital that Walz “should focus on protecting American lives and thanking the brave men and women of DHS law enforcement who are risking their lives to make communities in his state safer.”
