This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary celebration of the Jack O’Connor Heritage Center in Lewiston, Idaho, with an open house at the center, including a forum of outdoor writers discussing the hunting and shooting industry and changes since O’Connor passed away Jan. 20, 1978.
O’Connor was recognized as the dean of outdoor writers. He authored book and wrote a monthly column and articles in Outdoor Life for more than 30 years, hunted on several continents and was widely known for his sheep hunting exploits. Born in Arizona in 1902, O’Connor—according to his biography—taught English at the University of Arizona and was its first journalism instructor. He lived in Lewiston for many years, until his passing.
This weekend’s event begins with an evening reception at the Jack O’Connor center on Friday, followed by the Saturday open house running 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The O’Connor center features displays of Mr. O’Connor’s trophies. This Saturday’s round table forum will feature panelists including Bob Robb, Dave Workman, Jim Zumbo, Nephi Cole and Paula Biesen-Malicki.
Zumbo will also be the keynoter at Saturday evening’s anniversary banquet and live auction at the Lewiston Elk’s Lodge. The event will honor the late Darrel Inman, founding board member of the O’Connor center, with the Jack O’Connor Legacy Award. The award will be accepted by his widow, Sally. There will also be scholarship awards.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the exhibits and programs offered by the center.
