May 1 Application Deadline in MT for Moose, Sheep, Goat, Bison

There’s a big deadline coming this Friday for Montana hunters.

The deadline for moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat and bison license applications is this Friday, May 1, which is also the first day non-resident hunters may add their names to the Alternate’s List for a chance to purchase unused, returned combination licenses, according to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks department.

According to an FWP noticed published at The Outdoor Wire, all applications for moose, sheep, goat and bison licenses must be completed online, at a License Ambassador location or at an FWP office. Most FWP offices with license sales are open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The notice says hunters may also take advantage of the MyFWP mobile app. The app holds and displays licenses, permits and E-Tags, which can be downloaded and used in the field without cell service. To create a My FWP account, visit the MyFWP login page.

For more information on Montana hunting licenses and permits, go to fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply/hunting-licenses.

Meanwhile, this Friday is also the first day nonresident hunters can add their names to the Alternate’s List for a chance to purchase an unused nonresident combo license (Big Game Combo, General Elk and General Deer).

FWP says a hunter can sign up to purchase their choice of nonresident combination license. Once the list is randomized and a license becomes available, the hunter at the top of the list will be contacted to finalize the purchase of the license.

Hunters can add their names to the Alternate’s List from May 1 until June 1 through MyFWP.

  • Each hunter may only register on one combination license list (Big Game Combination, General Elk or General Deer) and is not eligible to purchase more than one nonresident combination license a year.
  • After the sign-up period closes, the list of interested hunters will be randomized to determine each hunter’s prioritization on these lists.

Payment for the license fee is not required to sign up for the Alternate’s List. If your name comes up, you will be contacted with instructions on how to complete the purchase of the license. Being on this list or obtaining a license from this list has no effect on your existing preference points.

MyFWP allows you to check your relative position on the Alternate’s List after the list is randomized in mid-June. The odds of getting a license from these lists vary greatly from year to year. Refunds and issuance may occur at any time, but availability of these licenses increases between early fall and the opening of general hunting season in late October.
