Parents of students affected by the shooting rampage at the Annunciation Church and School in Minneapolis last year are pushing for restrictive gun control, passed by the Senate but now stalled in the House where Republicans and Democrats are evenly split.
KMSP Fox 9 identified two of the activist parents as Mike Moyski and Malia Kimbrell. Moyski lost a child in that tragedy.
House Speaker Lisa Demuth is being accused of blocking Senate Bill 4067, which passed the Senate 34-33 on party lines, according to Alpha News. If passed, the legislation would, among other things:
- Ban modern sporting rifles and other semi-auto firearms, such as the AR-15.
- Ban magazines holding more than 17 rounds.
- Ban binary triggers.
- Ban user-completed firearms.
- Broaden so-called “red flag” laws.
MN SENATE PASSES GUN CONTROL BILL
Also joining in to push the gun control legislation are emergency room doctors, according to CBS News. They reportedly continue to be unable to sleep at night because of the Annunciation shooting. That incident resulted in two student fatalities and some 30 people wounded.
The gun control push is working into something of a frenzy since the Legislature is scheduled to adjourn May 18, next Monday.
According to KMSP, Annunciation parents are promising to keep pushing to change the gun laws, even if the current measure fails. One trauma surgeon reportedly insisted the tragedy could have been prevented. It is not clear how.
The shooting occurred on Aug. 27, 2025. The killer, identified as Robin Westman, opened fire at about 8:30 a.m. during an all-school mass, according to an account at Wikipedia. Westman was a former student at the school, who graduated in 2017.
According to the Wikipedia account, Westman had identified as transgender and legally changed is name in 2019. However, there was no evidence he had started receiving gender affirming treatment.
Particularly alarming were YouTube videos posted by Westman which showed references to suicide and included messages relating to violent thoughts. Wikipedia said there was one phrase suggesting that President Donald Trump should be killed.
