Published reports have revealed that the billionaire-backed Everytown for Gun Safety gun prohibition lobbying group is “teaming up with House Democrats on a $10 million ad campaign” to support gun control advocates now running for Congress.
Axios is identifying these candidates as “former volunteers for Moms Demand Action,” a subsidiary of Everytown. The story names JoAnna Mendoza, running in the 6th District of Arizona; Pia Dandiya, running in Florida’s 22nd District; Christina Bohannan (1st District), Sarah Trone Garriott (14th District) and Lindsay James (2nd District) all of Iowa; Christina Hines (10th District) and Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (8th District), both of Michigan, and Paige Cognetti (8th District) of Pennsylvania.
Everytown President John Feinblatt said in a statement, “For nearly two years, a MAGA House has rubber-stamped the Trump administration as it tore up federal gun safety laws, and flipping these eight seats is how we put a stop to it.”
According to Axios, “The money will go to fund TV and digital ads focused broadly on ‘public safety,’ referencing not just gun control but drug trafficking, immigration, crime, and police funding.”
Meanwhile, The Bulwark is reporting that “Giffords PAC, the pro–gun control organization founded by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), released two new ads as part of a $10 million campaign in battleground House races ahead of the November elections.”
The report also notes, “In Florida’s 13th district, where Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is fighting for re-election against Democrat Leela Gray, the PAC’s $800,000 campaign about Luna’s connections to the gun lobby will soon fill the airwaves.”
Democrats are hoping to flip Congress for a couple of reasons, first so they can once again launch an impeachment effort against President Trump, and second—as the advertising suggests—to reverse the pro-rights actions of his administration, including a reversal of years of heavy-handed actions by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives under the Biden administration.
History was made—and a lot of fury was ignited among gun prohibitionists—when ATF Chief Robert Cekada appeared at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference in Dallas last month. He spoke of efforts to change the ATF’s course and focus on real criminals instead of enforcing a zero tolerance policy toward federally licensed firearms dealers.
