When U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA)—now in the middle of her fifth term—recently posted a photo of herself on Facebook with seven women representing gun prohibition lobbying groups, apparently all from Washington state, it garnered some bristling reactions from her home state gun owners.
At last count, there were 125 comments on Facebook and several more on “X,” where the same message and photo were posted, and many, if not a majority, appeared to be negative.
The group photo was Cantwell’s way of thanking Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action advocates, plus a couple of youths from Students Demand Action—all wearing red T-shirts—for their recent meeting in Washington, D.C.
“We discussed the urgent need to prevent gun violence, which affects far too many people across Washington state,” Cantwell said in remarks explaining the photo.
Her gun-owning constituents responded with such comments as:
“Focus on a reduction in violence. It’s ignorant to focus on tools, like bats, cars, knives, or guns. It’s violent people who harms others, not inanimate objects.”
“Guns are not the problem. Only law abiding citizens obey gun laws. Do your research and you will find that the places with the most restrictive gun laws have the highest rates of violent crimes.”
“It’s not gun violence, quit with the tool already. It’s human violence, regardless of tool, check the data.”
“How about we start by not releasing violent criminals back into society. You know the kind of people who will use guns to commit violence.”
“Here is a concept, maybe punish the criminals. Not one gun in my house has ever been violent. So there is that!”
“Go after legal gun owners rights but do nothing about actual criminal gun shootings. It’s not gun violence it’s people violence. They don’t say knife violence or fist violence.”
“Since these misguided people started getting laws passed in Washington in 2014 crimes with guns have only increased. By 34%. Obviously what they are doing is not working.”
“Oh please. There has never been a “gun control” law that stopped a single crime. More relevant is the never ending Democrat quest for eventual civilian disarmament with no effect on criminals. I think it’s easy to understand. Disarmed citizens become ‘subjects’, a state preferred by Kings throughout history and Democrats today… such as Senator Cantwell. Also easy to understand: Democrats = Socialists = Democratic Socialists = Communists = tyrants. Just look at the actions of our own home-grown tyrants in Olympia.”
And it continued like that through scores of comments.
Cantwell’s voting record on gun rights has been negative, earning her praise from gun prohibition lobbying groups including Giffords.
